[[ Gunung Nuang - Conquered! ]]
- Monday, May 14, 2007 -
We finally made it, reaching the summit of Gunung Nuang, on Saturday, 12th of May 2007, around 2pm.
We have made it!
It was truly a memorable day, not only because now we can proudly tell everyone, we have been there, done that (OK OK, big deal, many people did that numerous time, and more even do it like twice a month, nevertheless, it was really an achievement for amateur like us), the unbearable test on our mental and physic, tormenting deep into each of them, and pushed our determination to its limit, it was the hardest thing we have done so far! And not to mention we have also made the headlines!
25 people, from our usual guy group of Chun, Yan, Chean, Yen Han, and added up the girls and their friends, with 9 more Chean's motorolan colleagues, started the long and crazy trekking journey at 7am, and for everyone to safely came back at the starting point, it was at an unbelievable time of 230am! No, there's no typo error, it's really AM we are talking about here! A total of almost 20 freaking hours of journey, which around 15 hours of trekking if excluded resting! Catch the whole story here.
The last few of us to arrive summit was around 2pm, almost 7 hours taken. At this point, you can see we were really out of schedule, night trekking was inevitable, if consider we need 7 hours more to go down. Although some of us did bring torch lights, but it was unquestionable lack of equipment for night trekking, thus, making the journey incredible harder and longer. Guess what, the most powerful torch light we have was not even a torch light, it was the camera LED of a Sony Ericsson K700i mobile phone! Really ironic.
Separated into 3 groups, we were only able to reach the starting point, the registration area, for the first group, at 930pm, second group at 11pm and the last, 230am. The big gap between the last group was due to the misunderstanding incident. But everyone arrived safe and sound, that's most important.
And why an estimated 8-10 hours trekking and hiking took us that much longer to finish? Almost 6 hours over schedule, if consider only the trekking time. Some of the reasons I can think of:
1) The group was too large.
We were jamming each other at the beginning, where everyone waiting in queue to climb up those steep and hard slopes. For every obstacle like this, it took us almost 20 minutes to get everyone up and going. And there were dozens of them along the journey!
2) Too relax at the beginning.
Everyone started at a relax pace, we took our sweet time to relax and took photos. We tried not to get our shoes wet when crossing water streams, and that really contribute a lot in our relax factor. Lack of timing sense, sense of crisis also causing us to not aware of our time schedule.
3) Stamina difference and injuries.
Everyone has different stamina, the stronger one has to wait for the weaker one. And the weaker your stamina, the most likely you will get injured. Adding the factor of bad hiking equipment, especially shoes, the weaker one becomes weaker. I can assure you that because I was one of those injured people that dragging the whole team to slow down!
4) Last but not least, all were amateurs!
No one had experience, that is none of us had reach the summit before, so we can't estimate how hard the journey, how long is needed. We just "heard" it was like this and that, and 8-10 hours need. Probably this is the main factor that causing all of the above! Assumption is the mother of all fucked-ups!
The experience of this Gunung Nuang Expedition really showed us something that beyond our imagination! And the lesson we've learned really unquestionable very valuable for any future activities, planning, and our day to day life. I'm sure all the 25 of us has just made an unforgettable chapter in our life!

- The Incident -
"Twenty-five went hill trekking, nine lost", "Hikers lost during hill trek", "SMS to dad saves 9 lost on mountain", "9 hikers found after lost in jungle for 9 hours".....etc
These are the headlines showing up on different local newspapers today. Some even taken up half of the page to report it alongside with nice photos. However, we found most of the reports on the incident were not accurate. Some claimed that the twenty-five hikers aged between 20-25. Some said they are all working in Motorola and worse, said the hikers lost in jungle for 9 hours ! Thus, we felt that we shall let our friends knew what had actually happened up there and why the nine people who were with us would eventually "lost".
- The Meet Up -
It was around 7pm when the last group met with the Motorolans at waterfall. The place was getting darker and darker. The last group which including Chun and friends led the way from the waterfall and the Motorolans followed behind. They're going down fast, trying to beat the time and reached the dam before the sky was all dark....
- The Break Up -
As night took over completely, Chun and friends reached the dam. They realised the Motorolans were not with them already. Nobody remembered when and how did they broke up, tiredness and home were the only thing in their mind. They did their best by waited for few minutes, sadly they were nowhere to be seen. Chun and team decide to move on.
- The Missing Motorolans -
The Motorolans were still at the camp site, in front of the river and not sure which way to go. They couldn't catch up with Chun's gang. They too waited there for some time, hoping the other team would be back to look for them, but it didn't happen....In this critical moment, they asked for help from the campers and the campers were kind enough to bring them. At the same time, an sms which played an important role in the whole incident, sent out to the girl's father, written "We are still finding our way out". It was around 8pm.
- "They're confirmed lost !" -
9:30pm, second team (Cheanny, Yanny and friends) finally arrived at base. Chean first called up to Chun's gang, and confirmed that they were coming down safely. Around 10:30pm, cars engine brought the exhausted Cheanny and Yanny out of dream. A man with worriment all over his face came out from the car, he is father of one of the Motorolan, asking us about her daughter's situation. He told us she was "lost". Within half an hour, the pondok already flooded with people, including people from the rescuer team. We were in shock and felt it was a little exaggerated. The worried father showed us an sms written "We are still finding our way out", sent by her daughter. Immediately Cheanny called up Chun's gang, and confirmed that the Motorolans were not coming down with them. Chean then tried to call the Motorolans, but just couldn't get through any of them. The father told the rescuer, "They're confirmed lost!"
11:30pm, Chun's gang finally reached base. We said adieu to the worried families there and headed home.
- The Rescue -
The Motorolans were on the right path, walking down step by step extremely slow as one of the girl's knee hurting badly. They reckoned at least another hour to reach the base. Somehow a phone call managed to sneak in through the weak signal, it was the girl's dad ! They realised that the rescuers were already on their way up to look for them. They've been told to stay at where they were. An hour passed, they finally heard the Jeep's engine not far in front.
It was almost 3am when the two Jeeps back to base. Reporters from different papers already standby there. The Motorolans finally came out from the jungle safely.
The rest, is history.....

Kong together with his 2 colleagues were sent to work in Shen Zhen, China for short term assignment (STA). According to Kong, he might be coming back after 6 months.
Hope that Jeanie and I managed to catch both Kong ( in SZ) and Joell (in HK) during our 11 days marathon holiday, visiting HK-Macau-SZ on 11th - 21st Nov 2007.
At 7:30am, Kong and his fellow colleagues set off to immigration counter and off they go.
